LPPM ULM Holds International Conference on Wetlands and Sustainable Development
Banjarmasin – The Institute for Research and Community Service of Lambung Mangkurat University (LPPM ULM) held an International Conference on Wetlands for Sustainable Development Goals (ICWSDGs) in conjunction with the 2024 National Wetlands Seminar at the Aria Barito Hotel Banjarmasin, Monday (9/9).
This activity was attended by various ULM representatives, including PIC RARP Prof. Muthia Elma, PIC Competitive Research Prof. Iryanti Fatyasari Nata, PIC Research & Mandatory Community Service Dr. Mustika Wati, as well as various related centers and sections such as the Center for Research Results Downstreaming, HKI Center, Finance Section, Legal & Personnel Section, and Public Relations & Cooperation Section.
Vice Rector for Cooperation, Public Relations, and Information Systems of ULM, Dr. Ir. Yusuf Azis, MSc, stated that this international conference was the first to be held on wetlands to support sustainable development.
“This conference is a follow-up to the national seminar routinely held by LPPM ULM,” he said.
The Head of LPPM ULM, Prof. Sunardi, emphasized that ULM is committed to playing an active role in sustainable development, including facing the challenges of climate change through the utilization of peatlands and mangroves. There are 4 (four) areas of discussion in this conference, namely Earth Sciences, Energy and Mining, Environmental Sciences, and Sustainable Development
“This conference is also a forum for disseminating the research results of ULM lecturers and researchers that support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said.
This event presented 5 (five) keynote speakers from four countries, including Prof. Azlan Kamari from Sultan Idris Education University, Malaysia, Assoc. Prof. Charles C.C Lee from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and Prof. Ikki Matsuda from Kyoto University, Japan. The other two keynote speakers were Assoc. Prof. Beta Paramita from the Indonesian Education University and Prof. Handry Imansyah from Lambung Mangkurat University.
ULM affirms its position as a superior university in wetland management in accordance with its vision. Some of the research highlighted include mangrove management, proboscis monkey conservation, and research related to agriculture and wetlands.
SDGs, or Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), cover various social and economic issues that play an important role in realizing global welfare.
