This hearing is of course very important for ULM and the ULM academic community. This is because Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protect discoveries and intellectual works produced by lecturers, researchers and students. With IPR, universities can ensure that their discoveries and works are not misused by other parties and receive proper recognition. Apart from that, IPR can also be a source of income for universities through licensing or selling rights. In an academic context, IPR also encourages innovation and research, because it provides incentives for lecturers and students to create and discover new things. Therefore, IPR plays an important role in improving the academic reputation and contribution of universities to the progress of science and technology.
Prof. Sunardi, S Si, M Sc, Ph.D also explained that so far LPPM ULM has carried out the task of protecting the works of ULM lecturers and academics by registering the IPRs of lecturers’ works. He hopes that in the future the LPPM ULM IPR Center will be able to facilitate the community and MSMEs when they want to register trademark and patent rights. “up to over 5 million for patent facilitators or consultants,” he said.
