Impactful Community Service Program: ULM Students Promote Innovation in Local Fish Processing in Wiritasi Village
TANAH BUMBU – Students participating in the Impactful Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), played an active role in educating the community of Wiritasi Village, Kusan Hilir District, through training on fishery processing innovations on Sunday (August 2, 2025) at the Wiritasi Village Office.
The training, themed “Innovation in Local Fish Processing: Empowering the Community Through Fish Roll Production as an Economically Valuable Processed Alternative,” was initiated jointly by the Wiritasi Village Government as a form of collaboration between universities and the village government in developing local potential.
The Head of Wiritasi Village, Abdul Razak, explained that this activity aims to introduce innovative processed fish products, increase the variety of local MSME products, and increase the selling value of seafood.
In the practical session, ULM KKN students demonstrated the process of making fish rolls using parang-parang fish as the main ingredient, while also explaining their nutritional content and health benefits.
“This training has broadened our residents’ horizons regarding new business opportunities based on marine products. The innovations from ULM students are expected to provide skills for MSMEs and the community,” said Abdul Razak.
The Head of Kusan Hilir District, Amirullah, S.Pd.I., M.A.P., also expressed his appreciation for the KKN students’ work program, which he considered practical, innovative, and relevant to the needs of the coastal village.
“Processing like this has never existed in Wiritasi before. This idea from ULM students is very beneficial for developing local MSMEs,” he said.
The event was attended by Gafur Ariasi, Head of Fishery Product Processing at the Tanah Bumbu Fisheries Service, fisheries extension worker Isnaniah, MSMEs, and local housewives. The participants’ enthusiasm was evident in their involvement in the fish roll-making process, from ingredient processing to product packaging.
Through the Impactful Thematic KKN program, ULM affirms its commitment to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly community service. The innovation brought by the students is expected to be the first step in maximizing the potential of local fisheries while improving the welfare of coastal residents of Tanah Bumbu.
