Two Ulm Students Won 3rd Place in the UCDC Debate Competition
Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) showed its existence in achieving achievements through 2 students Bhisma Ridho (Medical Student) and Zaina Safarina (Psychology Student) in the prestigious University Ciputra Debating Championship (UCDC) competition which took place on 11-12 May 2024. This competition uses a system British Parliamentary debate, which is also used in the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC), thus adding prestige and challenge for the participants.
This activity, which was participated in by 52 universities throughout Indonesia, took place online. Despite this, the atmosphere of the match remained hot and tense. Each session before competing, participants are given 30 minutes to discuss case building or drafting arguments after receiving a motion and their position as a pro or con team that has been given while being supervised by the LO committee through pre-agreed media such as WA video call, LINE video call, or Google Meet.
Bhisma and Zaina’s struggle was certainly not easy, they fought from the first round against teams from other large universities who had the basics and background as well as mature debate strategies. However, with strong enthusiasm and determination, as well as thorough preparation, both of them succeeded in eliminating their competitors in the preliminary round.
They continued to maintain this enthusiasm until the Grand Final. Even though they faced teams from other well-known universities, Bhisma and Zaina remained vocal and enthusiastic in defending their arguments. This is what brought Bhisma Ridho and Zaina Safarina to win 3rd place in the UCDC Debate Competition competing with leading universities such as Udayana University, Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), and Airlangga University (UNAIR).
By winning 3rd place from two ULM students, this adds to the list of achievements that have been made and strengthens ULM’s reputation as one of the leading universities in the field of debate. It is hoped that this achievement can trigger other students to be able to bring the good name of the ULM alma mater to other achievements.
